Seeking professional help when you are having marital problems is the best solution since most of us are either don’t have the skills to do so or are afraid of exposing their faults or sharing their problems.

Some people are skeptic of marriage counseling because they think that these specialists are just after their money, they are all wrong. These kinds of people need guidance of finding a marriage counselor and deciding if counseling will work for them by solving their marital problems. These are some of the guidelines that you can use to determine if you need marriage counseling.

  • You married too early.
  • Your parents divorced.
  • You are earning very low income and you are the man of the house.
  • You married a spouse of a different faith.
  • You often criticize each other rather than supporting and complementing.
  •  Feel contempt to each other.
  • You separate from one another.

A lot of research has been done about marriage counseling (we Danes use the term effektive familierådgivning) and there are a lot of schools offering these studies. There are a lot of critics who argue that only women gain from marriage counseling. There are numerous researches that have been done to prove this point. The main reason why some people are so skeptic is that most people wait until the problem reaches to a point that the situation is so critical so that can get counseling. The best period to get counseling and make it effective is when it’s still early or there are signs of the above aforementioned problems.

There are also certain types of couples, which in their relationship (or parforhold problemer in Danish), can benefit from counseling, not everyone gets the most from marriage counseling. This is because you may live together for so long and have the experience of living with some issues. Couples who get the most from counseling include:

  • Young couples.
  • Couples still in love.
  • Open couples that are not ashamed of sharing their problems.
  • Couples not having sex.

The following does not benefit from counseling or get just the least from it.

  • Couples that wait for too long before visiting a counselor.
  • Couples that have already decided on getting a divorce.
  • Couples that are not open or welcome any opinions concerning their marriage.

Sometimes your colleagues and peers can be your marriage counselor, a happy couple has the skill of working out their problems and you can a lot from them by talking to them or visiting them with your spouse so that you can learn how happy people live, Keep in mind that unhappy couples don’t have the skills and you have nothing to learn but things to watch out so that they may not affect your marriage.

  • Don’t wait for so long before seeking counseling, seek help when signs of unhappy marriage start showing so that you deal with the problem effectively.
  • Be open and welcome opinions of solving your marital problems, remember that we don’t know everything.
